How is it my headphones just pick up static from the TV?

All right. So I have an Emerson LCD TV with a single audio output: "Audio Out [coaxial]." I want to listen to the TV through headphones, so it has a headphone jack to RCA converter that has two RCA ends, white and red (left and right audio). I put it in a converter and to be mono and plugged into the audio output. My TV still plays the sound normally and all my headphone collection is static. Can anyone help please? Are not my headphones capable of interpreting a coaxial cable signal or something? If so, I knew I have headphones or something else?

You can connect this to such an amplifier (preferably one with a headphone jack) Unless the headphones are amplified, we need a sound source with a headphone jack. Is separately using a tuner? Some satellite or cable tuners have analog audio outputs. If so, you may be able to connect to it.
